Hawaii Five-0 DVDnow officially has a story arc. Sort of. We’re not looking at lost dvd-esque complexity or anything, but in tonight’s episode we finally saw what I’ve been harping on for weeks on end now: a mention of the event’s of the pilot. We still have no idea what happened to McGarrett’s sister, but it turns out that McGarrett has not forgotten about the red toolbox left to him by his father. He has done his homework on the box’s content and enlists Chin in the hunt for answers; because when you have nearly unlimited power, you should ask the guy most suspected of corruption for help. Yeah.
Anyway, while that developed into a pseudo-startling revelation (Oh my gosh, McGarrett’s mom was actually murdered! AH!) the rest of the episode (you know, 97% of it) focused on the case at hand; because we all know how CBS feels about serializing a show. Hawaii Five-0 went the serial killer route in this episode, using a man who was jilted at the altar as the antagonist; or, as I like to call him, the women-who-look-like-his-ex murderer - I think it’s catchy. They skimped on the details of what exactly it is that he usually does to the women he abducts (come on, this isn’t Dexter DVD) but rest assured, he’s a bona fide murderer.
The procedures usually (and by that I mean always) break up in this fashion: Dano and McGarrett interview the suspects and family members while Chin and Kono take care of the detective work. This Mystery Team set up works because it puts one of the stronger actors (Scott Caan and Daniel Kim) with one of the weaker actors (Alex O’Loughlin and Grace Park). On that same note, though, I do start to wonder if Shaggy and Daphne - I mean, McGarrett and Kono will ever team up in an episode. A change of pace is something that a show marred in consistency could certainly use, because it doesn’t appear that Emmy-winning writing will be coming to this show anytime soon.
